Nitro is a littermate to Fire, Eyes for Ewe Spitfire Saleen. Nitro is a well balanced blend of instinct and sense. Nitro has the best of both his parents. From his mother, Shannon's Fine Brandy Wine HSAs STDs HTAD1 CGC FGDCH TF-III "Brandy" , he has the drive and intensity to work stock. From his father, Woodsorrell May-Two-Four FGDCH "Radar", he has the ability to turn off when not needed and show a more laid back and loving personality.

Nitro is a dog in training for many activities. He is a certified therapy dog. He amazed me by being able to take and pass the Canine Good Citizen and Therapy Dogs International test after only 7 weeks of basic obedience at 14 months old. I knew he would be able to qualify as a therapy dog. I just thought we would need to practice a bit more that just 7 weeks.

He took to sheep quickly. His herding desire is strong and he shows a lot of potential that I hope to tap into. He is currently trains with Dee Lee of Way to Me Kennels in Sanford, North Carolina and Carol Calhoun in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. Dee and Nitro earned a score of 88 and a first leg in AKC Started A at the Border Collie Regional Specialty in June 2005. He also passed the first test for his AKC PT title. In October they passed their second test and earned the PT title. He also earned his 2nd Started A leg that same weekend and went on to win Reserve High in Trial with an 86.5. He finished his HSAs title in November placing 3rd. April 2006 brought Nitro's first Started B leg by placing 2nd with a score of 82.

Nitro and I debuted in the ASCA herding arena in May 2006. He scored a qualifying score of 83 and placed 3rd in his first trial. He earned a 76 in his second trial and earned his STDs title. He also has his first open leg with a score of 93.

We debuted in AHBA herding in July 2006. Nitro earned a qualifying score of 87/90 and placed in a 3 way tie for 2nd. He ended up earning 4th place. He earned his HTAD1 title the next day. He tried out HTD1 the next day and placed 5th with a qualifying score of 80/90. He finished his HTDI title under Wink Mason in October 2006.

I look forward to continuing to develop his abilities and pursuing the AKC, ASCA, AHBA and USBCHA trials.

Nitro was loaned out for a bit for goose patrol in the Larchmont area of Norfolk, Virginia. His job was to keep a flock of about 20 geese from coming onto the property. He LOVED his job. He had a wonderful view of the Elizabeth River and a great area all to himself. We prayed he did not fall in love with the place and not want to come home!! He found that he was too good at his job and after a bit the geese stopped coming. Job well done!!

Nitro earned his Rally Novice title in 3 shows in April and May 2008. Though obedience is definitely not his favorite event, he did do a great job!!

Nitro, like his mother, loves the ball. I tried to not teach him about a ball so that he would not become as ball obsessed as she is. He taught himself! After his ball he loves his cat next. I guess since we do not have our own sheep he is making due by cat herding. "Socks" does not find it amusing though.

Nitro has an extremely loving and gentle nature. He is known to jump up in bed with me to get a little snuggling time. He will take time and rest his head on my shoulder for a little ear rubbing and then with a gentle good-bye kiss, he is gone again. He is one of my most affectionate dogs. I attribute this not only to the way he was raised and the temperaments behind him but also that he was the runt of the litter and became a favorite the day he was born. He was half the size of the other pups. He has unquestionably made up for it now by being the largest of the litter!
